A True Leader

It has been almost 10 years since the great leader of the Iglesia Ni Cristo passed away. The memory of Brother Eraño G. Manalo cannot be wiped away. He exemplified a true leader of God. One who cared for the sheep and tended to our needs.

Screen Shot 2019-01-02 at 12.26.46 AM

The work of a true pastor of the Lord is not simply preaching. They KNOW the needs of the servants of God. How does a leader get to know the needs of the servants? He does not merely rely on hearsay or by word of mouth. He finds out for himself. He listens and finds out their concerns and their fears. That’s what Jesus said:

“I am the good shepherd. As the Father knows me and I know the Father, in the same way I know my sheep and they know me. And I am willing to die for them.” John 10:14

How do you get to know them if you don’t even take the time to talk to them? Brother Eraño was amazing at that. He spoke to the people. He asked them their names, how they were, where they are from, what is it that they wanted to talk to them about and he remembered them. There was no express meet and greetwhere people are shuffled through a line and you get to touch one hand, a picture is taken and then you are herded off into the nearest exit. It used to be a real meeting and an experience.

Brother Eraño really spoke to people so he knew there were differences in cultures, in countries, in livelihood, and even in seasons.

He knew it did not make sense to hold grand evangelical missions if it was hurricane season or if it was winter season and people would have difficulties driving in snow. He knew that the lifestyles and livelihood of church members in Japan were different from the church members in New York.

Brother Eraño even knew that certain activities did not fit some cultures so he did not insist on them.

Nowadays, it seems the current Church “leader” will simply IMPOSE what he wants because he can and everyone simply has to live with it, whether it makes sense or not. It’s what you call “one size fits all” decision making. Whatever he says, goes for everyone no matter where you are. Could some things be done like that everywhere? Sure but it does not mean it makes sense. Let me give you a couple of specific examples:

  1. Holding a SIMULTANEOUS WORLD-WIDE EVANGELICAL MISSION. Could it be done? Sure! But that would mean it would be held at 7:00 AM in one venue and 11:00 PM in another venue. Does it make sense to invite guests at 7:00 AM and some at 11:00 PM? NO. Could it be done? Yes. But is it effective? NO.
  2. Let’s try another one. The WORLD-WIDE WALK. Was it done? Of course! There were people who walked in the rain and some had to walk in the snow. It even looked great in pictures! But did it really make sense? Not really. If you think about it, what was the point of The Walk? Fund raising? That could have been done by simple monetary contributions. Then what? FOR SHOW. Nothing more.

The point is, decisions of a GREAT leader takes into consideration the welfare of the people. There will be people who will follow and some will not even complain but if a leader is WISE, he would think about how it would affect those involved. It is not merely insisting to get it done, especially when there really is no true benefit to it. The examples I mentioned above were done. The Church members but those are merely for show and to be able to say “Ooh! We are ONE!” But the reality is, there really is nothing gained, except for announcements of accomplishments and for photo ops.

I know this is odd to use but I am going to quote the comedian Chris Rock when he said, “Sure you can drive with your feet if you wanted to, but it don’t make it a good idea!” Ok, let’s be more scriptural. “Some of you say, “We can do anything we want to.” But I tell you that not everything is good for us.” 1 Corinthians 6:12. Get the idea?

Let me take one more example: Vow Prayers. We keep getting told about joining a vow prayer for this and vow prayer for that. Are vow prayers bad? No but the leaders need to also be considerate of the members. They cannot just keep imposing schedule after schedule without thinking about the life and schedules of the people.

Wait a minute. You might say, isn’t it that we should sacrifice our time and effort for these things? Sure, but the vow prayers before were for a specific purpose and a specific time frame. Nowadays, vow prayers are endless and for any and all reasons. Special Offering weekend… setting aside weekend.. Evangelical Mission weekend… Pastoral Visit… Donation weekend… it is non stop! What is wrong with that? If the brethren and especially officers are always being required to attend this vow and that vow, what happens? They end up getting weary of them and eventually missing them. Am I speaking against God’s commands? On the contrary, the Bible says:

“It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.” Ecclesiastes 5:5

Why set these endless vow prayers which the people will end up breaking because they have no end? I hope I am making point across because I am sure that someone will read this and say AHA! You are against prayers! You are against Missionary Work! Wrong. My point is, that our previous Administrator, Brother Eraño, was always considerate and tried to make things easy, not hard. He knew that life was already hard enough as it is. He did not have to add anymore burdens than what we already have. Jesus and the Apostles had that same spirit. Here is a specific example:

When the debate whether the Gentiles should abide by the Jewish tradition of circumcision, the 1st century Administrator considered not only the culture of the Gentiles but also the difficulty of imposing it upon them. What did the leader decide?

“It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. Acts 15:19-20

Did Jesus simply say, ok, obey whatever I tell you and deal with it even when it’s too much for you? He also was considerate: “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. ” Matthew 11:28

Many of us have burdens. We have pressures at work. We have troubles at home. Scraping up every cent is tough for many. LIFE IS HARD. Obeying God’s commands are already tough to apply in life. Brother Eraño knew all that. He empathised with us. He knew sacrifices were made by brethren. There was no need to add to them. He was truly guided by God. How could we ever forget someone like that?

In this new year, let’s all pray for the Church of Christ. Pray that we may have a wise, true leader who will care for us.

“Wisdom will control your mind,
    and you will be pleased
    with knowledge.
 Sound judgment and good sense
    will watch over you.
Wisdom will protect you
    from evil schemes
and from those liars
who turned from doing good
    to live in the darkness.
Most of all they enjoy
    being mean and deceitful.
They are dishonest themselves,
and all they do is crooked.”
Proverbs 2:10-15

  4. Upon seeing complaints about rice donations in Madrid Rue’s FB site, I posted the following from the internet regarding signs of a cultish church: (https://crossexamined.org/10-signs-cultic-church/)
    1. Members are not allowed to ask questions of the leadership. In cultic churches, questions are condemned. Most likely, cultic leaders do not want to expose any weakness on their part. Thus, questions are restricted and shown to be a sin. The leader may show that to question him or her is like questioning God because the cultic leader has assumed a delusional godlike stature. In authentic churches, questions are the means of growth. The leader and leadership are transparent. People who have nothing to hide are transparent.
    2. Traditions (or practices/“tuntunin”) are equated to commandments. While all churches have favored traditions, cultic churches elevate their traditions to the level of the Ten Commandments. Jesus combated the Pharisees over this very issue. Jesus said to the Pharisees in reply to a question pertaining to their traditions, Matthew 15:5-9 Good News Translation (GNT) 5 But you teach that if people have something they could use to help their father or mother, but say, ‘This belongs to God,’ 6 they do not need to honor their father.[a] In this way you disregard God’s command, in order to follow your own teaching. 7 You hypocrites! How right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you! 8 ‘These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from me. 9 It is no use for them to worship me because they teach human rules as though they were my laws!’” In contrast, authentic churches—while they have traditions they love—will place biblical commands over personal desires. This is not to say that changing traditions is easy. But if an assembly sets an exorbitant and stringent set of traditions as a prerequisite for a person’s attendance to their church, then it is likely that the assembly is leaning towards a cultic code of conduct.
    3. Cultic churches are opaque. A strong sign on the spectrum of authenticity is transparency. Authentic churches are transparent as they have nothing to hide. This includes every aspect of ministry including financial matters. Cultic churches are almost always opaque and secretive. Cultic leaders do not want the general public to know what they are doing. The more secretive a movement, the more cause for concern. Jesus publicly taught, publicly performed miracles, was publicly crucified, publicly resurrected, was publicly seen alive after his resurrection, and publicly ascended into heaven.
    4. The church desires its membership to become more like themselves than like Christ. The final sign of a cultic church deals with the end goal. What do the leaders desire? Cultic leaders want to make their members more like themselves. Authentic churches desire people to become more like Christ. If Christ is the Son of God, then he is the perfect example for one to model. When leaders become cultic, they desire people to become like themselves so that they can exert more power and control. Coercive and manipulative measures are used. Jesus, by contrast, allows people to come to him fully knowing what is expected of them. Concerning cultic leaders, Jesus warned those who abusively used people in his day, saying, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as fit for hell as you are” (Matthew 23:15)!

  11. I don’t think I will waste my time watching Michael Sandoval & company’s “defender of the faith” episodes. I would rather watch Bro. Rolando Dizon’s preachings such as yesterday’s (Jan. 19) Special Worship Service which I was able to join live via ZOOM. I was so impressed and found it very enlightening and much, much better than the worship services officiated by EVM and his minions combined. I am so happy for our EVM-expelled brethren who now have a legal platform through a US-based foundation, OPHIRFA, to carry on with their religious activities without having to establish a new religion. This is precisely what I have been hoping for as a real alternative to the boring, repetitive services being conducted in the EVM-led INC. I was touched seeing the uniformed choir singing newly composed hymns. Perhaps, this is God’s peaceful and righteous way, not only to allow His true servants to continue serving Him, but who knows, to make EVM reconsider all those dubious church practices he has implemented which deviated radically from those espoused by FYM and EVM. It was heartwarming to hear Bro. Dizon stick to what is written in the Bible in search of the evolving complete fulfillment of God’s prophecies. Particularly enlightening are the following verses he cited about the Israelite exiles in the olden days going back to Jerusalem to rebuild God’s temple which parallel the plight of the present day defenders:
    1. Ezra 1:2,5-6 Good News Translation (GNT)2 “This is the command of Cyrus, Emperor of Persia. The Lord, the God of Heaven, has made me ruler over the whole world and has given me the responsibility of building a temple for him in Jerusalem in Judah….5 Then the heads of the clans of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, the priests and Levites, and everyone else whose heart God had moved got ready to go and rebuild the Lord’s Temple in Jerusalem.6 All their neighbors helped them by giving them many things: silver utensils, gold, supplies, pack animals, other valuables, and offerings for the Temple.
    2. Isaiah 1:26 New Living Translation (NLT) 26 Then I will give you good judges again and wise counselors like you used to have. Then Jerusalem will again be called the Home of Justice and the Faithful City.” ** This verse helps to establish the position of the Small Remnant without an Executive Minister to guide them but with GOOD JUDGES and WISE COUNSELORS they used to have. Besides, our Lord Jesus Christ has always been King and High Priest to all his disciples:
    3. Hebrews 7:26-28 Good News Translation (GNT) 26 Jesus, then, is the High Priest that meets our needs. He is holy; he has no fault or sin in him; he has been set apart from sinners and raised above the heavens. 27 He is not like other high priests; he does not need to offer sacrifices every day for his own sins first and then for the sins of the people. He offered one sacrifice, once and for all, when he offered himself. 28 The Law of Moses appoints men who are imperfect to be high priests; but God’s promise made with the vow, which came later than the Law, appoints the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

  13. Powerful warning from Martin Luther King, as pointed out in this article, which INC members should heed: SINCERE IGNORANCE And CONSCIENTIOUS STUPIDITY (Is there anything more dangerous?) https://patch.com/wisconsin/caledonia/sincere-ignorance-and-conscientious-stupidity
“To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant.”(Alcott)
“There is nothing more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity” When Martin Luther King Jr. said this it was in the context of explaining the rationalization of the enslavement, mistreatment, and vilification of African Americans by the white community. African American slaves were thought to be an inferior species and thus deserving of their fate. Written in our Constitution is the formula for representation of the states where every man gets a single vote and the slaves were considered three fifths of a person and not considered to have rights (women – none at all).
We now recognize the pure folly of that way of thinking. Those who did think that way were sincere (in their ignorance) and were thought to be conscientious (in their stupidity).
It was the world as they thought it was – and should be. Other instances? People were persecuted because they said the Earth was round (when everyone knew it was flat). Saying that the Earth was not the center of the universe went against teachings of the Church – then arguably the most powerful institution in the world at that time – this too put one’s life at risk. Those representing the old-school way of thinking were sincere and conscientious (in their ignorance and stupidity).
